This,
secondly only to the engine block heater in time and energy,
would be the hardest job I've ever done myself.
Hacks:
Some say that if you just hit it with a hammer, or get the fans
spinning yourself, you can get your car started.
My
problem was, after a long trip or something, I would try and
start my car, and get nothing! So I'd have to wait for the car
to "cool" down or something before I could go anywhere...
very frustrating.
Just get a NEW/REFERBISHED one, because you don't want to do
this again. 
I would not recommend this project to any lone DIY. If you
want to submit an article on "how to" I'd be glad
to post it. The best suggestion I can make, if get one on ebay,
and give it to your local profit center and have them install
it. That will at least save you a few hundred.
